Cycling is one of the greatest ways to keep fit around. Without creating unnecessary pollution and burning 400-700 calories per hour it is a wonderful way to enjoy watching the landscape fly by. However safety and comfort are just as important as enjoyment, so here are a few tips to ensure you have fun and stay safe.

Get your technique down. Before you set out on an expedition make sure you’re experienced and skilled enough to do so. Know how to pedal correctly, turn and make signals and brake properly. You should also know what to do if your bike breaks down mid-ride.Pair up. If you’re not skilled enough to do all the above, or feel the route is perhaps too difficult for you to then find a more experienced partner to come with you. This will also be great moral support as well as good company.Gear up. Make sure you have appropriate kit for your journey. Do you have a helmet? Get one. Make sure your bike fits you, your brakes are working and that your saddle is all good. Also you should invest in knee pads and a pair of cycling shorts (if you’re a regular cyclist), these will provide comfort, safety and stop you from getting irritated on the trail.Plan your journey. You should know what’s ahead of you before you set out. What’s the road like? Is the route hard? Will you be travelling by day or by night? What is the weather like? Have you packed enough water and food? Have you got a means of contacting someone if you break down or get lost? These are all questions you should know the answers to.What if? Hope for the best but plan for the worst. When you’re out on your own (or with a companion) you should have back up plans if things go pear shaped. You should know what to do if there is an accident, road block or a breakdown, and be prepared for weather changes and fatigue.Only after all of this has been sorted are you truly ready for a biking journey. It takes quite little time and effort with modern technology and will potentially save you hours of hassle and distress. So be smart and do the right thing, cycle safely.
