Bicycles and Pollution

One of the most powerful weapons in the fight against pollution has been the bicycle. The bicycle is truly one of the greatest inventions ever made. When people first started using bikes they helped end the problem of horse droppings everywhere. In the modern world they do much more than that.
Did you know that you can build about one hundred bikes with the cost it takes to build just one car? People in the city mostly live within a few miles of work, so a bicycle could really prove to save on the cost and the environment.
A cyclist could spend time breathing exhaust fumes. These fumes are dangerous to your health. If you live in the city you know that cycling has benefits that counter the negatives. Here are some ways that you can protect your health while you are cycling:
· Wearing a mask or air filter will protect you from airborne particles however it may not protect you from carbon monoxide.
· You have to keep a distance from the back of trucks, buses and exhaust pipes. (A good thing is that many diesel trucks will have cleaner air coming out; still keeping your distance will be a good idea).
· If a smog alert is in affect it would be a good idea to take public transportation.
· If you can be flexible with your working hours consider traveling during time where traffic is lower.
Riding a bicycle is one of the best things you can do practically for the environment and your health. Cycling, running or walking are some very healthy habits everyone should adopt, so get your running clothing out and get into some motion. If cities were full of bikes instead of motorists there would be a lot less pollution.
