Earpieces to be banned
There is a heated debate that goes on about the issue of banning the use of earpieces during races in the cycle tourneys. The base idea of the decision to remove earpieces emanated from the logic that riders are supposed or expected to be the sole decision makers and strategists at each phase of the race. No outside intrusion is to be permitted in this strategic decision making aspect which is what was happening through the medium of the ear pieces. The basic element of individual intelligence and physical ability which makes any sport a matter of interest was being compromised with due to the ear piece element.
In order for the sport to remain attractive amongst viewers and spectators this move was considered essential. This was the only way that cycling per se and cyclists as a whole would gain importance amongst the public at large, apart from having dedicated lines of clothing, accessories and gears solely devoted to them such as Ascis Kayano has for running.
There is also the issue of the cyclist being distracted with the numerous external inputs that the cyclist receives via the earpieces which have led to quite a number of accidents, some serious and others fatal too.
While it can be argued that in any sort be it soccer or such other field sports there is the element of communication between the players on the field and the coach or other team management staff on the sidelines, what reason is there for cycling to be specifically picked out as one sport where the communication is taken in such a serious manner.
Cycling as a sport has been hit with a number of doping cases in the recent past and therefore the earpiece issue has taken a serious turn for immediate attention and action. In order for the sport to live its high standards these issues needs to be immediately attended to and a decision reached.
